Balcony watercolor Alex Righetto video

Romeo and Juliet balcony scene

Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene is a famous and iconic moment in Shakespeare’s play. It features Romeo, who has just met Juliet at a party and immediately fallen in love with her, deciding to climb up to her balcony to steal a kiss. This romantic gesture is both daring and poetic and has become a symbol of the intense passion between the two young lovers.

In fact, the balcony scene has inspired many artistic interpretations over the years, such as paintings, sculptures, films, and even fashion collections. For instance, in 2021, a new art collection of mine premiered during Art Basel in Miami entirely inspired by Romeo and Juliet, with the balcony scene as the centerpiece.

This demonstrates the enduring fascination and relevance of this classic tale of love and tragedy.

Art inspired by Romeo and Juliet

My new art collection comprises twelve distinct pieces that are created with a combination of ink, watercolor, and mixed media. Rather than depicting the entire story of Romeo and Juliet, the collection primarily showcases key moments in their relationship.

To add an intriguing twist, the narrative in the exhibition was altered through a “what-if” scenario: “What would have happened if Romeo and Juliet had not died?” This prompted me to explore the different stages and changes that could have occurred in the love story between the two main characters.

The artwork series is designed to highlight these changes and their emotional impact on the two lovers. It is also meant to be an investigation of the journey we all undertake in our own love stories, and the adjustments we need to make within ourselves to sustain a successful relationship.

Through this collection, I wanted to create a story that went beyond the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet and provided a thought-provoking perspective on the transformative power of love.

Throughout life, we often come across relationships where the initial passion and excitement are abundant, but over time, the spark fades, and the affair fails to grow into something more meaningful. This phenomenon is commonly known as infatuation, which is a temporary state of heightened emotion and physical attraction that often fades once the initial desire has been satisfied.

Unfortunately, many people mistake infatuation for love and enter into relationships based on temporary feelings rather than genuine connections. This can lead to disappointment and heartbreak when the initial passion fizzles out, and the relationship fails to develop into something deeper.

Benvolio finds Romeo hopeless and nearly sick at the beginning of the play because his love has not corresponded with a girl.

“Why, then, O brawling love, O loving hate,

O anything of nothing first created,
O heavy lightness, serious vanity,

Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms,
Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health,

Still-waking sleep that is not what it is.
This love feel I, that feel no love in this.”

Romeo and Juliet act 1 scene 1 ( Romeo speaking to Benvolio)

Is it right to celebrate Romeo’s hasty decision to move on and profess his love for Juliet immediately upon meeting her at a party as true love?

Some might argue that Romeo’s quick infatuation with Juliet was a result of youthful passion and an impulsive desire to find love. However, others may contend that true love requires more time and deeper connection to develop, rather than being a sudden and fleeting emotion based solely on physical attraction.

It is crucial to recognize that true love is not just a momentary feeling or a fleeting emotion. It involves a deeper and more profound emotional connection that can only be achieved through time, effort, and a genuine desire to connect with another person.

What makes a relationship last? What makes partners grow?

The question of what it takes to sustain a long-lasting and meaningful relationship is a crucial one. It is one that every couple must ask themselves and answer honestly if they hope to build a strong and lasting connection. Without a clear understanding of what it takes to make a relationship work, it can easily become nothing more than a fleeting and temporary bond.

However, not everyone is willing to make the changes necessary to build a lasting and fulfilling relationship. Many people are searching for their ideal partner but are not willing to make the necessary changes within themselves to become the kind of person that is capable of sustaining a healthy and loving relationship.

Perhaps, if we take inspiration from Romeo’s story, we can find a new perspective on what it takes to build a lasting relationship. Rather than focusing on our own selfish desires and needs, we need to learn to put the needs of our partners first. It is only through selflessness and a willingness to change that we can hope to build the kind of deep and meaningful connection that is the foundation of lasting love.

As an artist, I sought to challenge the traditional visual language associated with Romeo’s story by using watercolors to create a new and unique perspective. By doing so, I aimed to create a new and thought-provoking interpretation of this classic tale that encourages us to reconsider our own assumptions about what it takes to build a meaningful and lasting relationship.

Romeo and Juliet: the balcony scene

At the heart of the collection, there was a particular artwork that stood out – the balcony scene. My intention with this painting was to portray a perfect representation of love, one that goes beyond the physical attraction and youthful foolishness often associated with the two star-crossed lovers.

At first glance, the painting appears to depict a vortex between the two lovers, with each standing face to face in the foreground. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that there is more to the painting than meets the eye. The image is cleverly constructed to show the lovers’ reflection on the opposite side in the background, creating a deeper and more profound visual representation of their connection.

the two lovers are not only positioned in the foreground but are also reflected on the opposite side of the painting in the background

If you look closely, you will notice that the two lovers are not only positioned in the foreground but are also reflected on the opposite side of the painting in the background. This subtle but intentional detail adds a deeper layer of meaning to the artwork.

For a relationship to endure, it’s important for both partners to be able to empathize with each other and see things from each other’s perspective. In other words, the ability to assume each other’s points of view is a crucial component of a lasting and healthy relationship.

When we view our partner as an extension of ourselves, and they are willing to do the same, it can be a powerful declaration of love. In essence, it’s an expression of the deep level of empathy and understanding we have for each other.

This sentiment is beautifully captured in the words of Romeo and Juliet when they declare to each other, “I am willing to be you.” These simple yet profound words demonstrate the level of selflessness and devotion that is required for a truly enduring and loving relationship.

When both partners are willing to put their egos aside and view each other as extensions of themselves, a deeper and truer form of love can exist that is not solely based on physical attraction or infatuation.

In my artwork inspired by Romeo and Juliet’s love story, I wanted to convey this message of selflessness as the foundation for enduring love. The painting is a visual representation of the idea that when we view our partner as an essential part of ourselves, we create a bond that transcends physical aspects.

In essence, the artwork is meant to inspire the viewer to consider their partner as their own wing or true appendix, recognizing the importance of putting their partner’s needs before their own to create a mutually fulfilling and enduring relationship.

The rendering of the painting

In creating this particular painting, I opted to use Indian ink on watercolor paper. The decision to do so was motivated by my desire to create a graphic novel style image, with the primary colors being black and white.

To add depth and dynamism to the composition, I incorporated splashes of red color. These serve to underscore the sense of movement and energy within the artwork, highlighting the intense passion and emotion that characterizes the love between Romeo and Juliet.

let me know if you like it.

In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet’s story has remained a timeless classic for centuries, captivating audiences with its powerful depiction of love, sacrifice, and tragedy. Through their example, we are reminded of the importance of being willing to change, grow, and adapt to be with someone we love.

As we have seen through the exploration of the artwork collection inspired by Romeo and Juliet, love is a complex and multifaceted emotion that cannot be reduced to mere physical attraction or infatuation. True love requires sacrifice and the willingness to let go of our egos and embrace our partner as an extension of ourselves.

Through the use of different artistic techniques and visual elements, these paintings offer a fresh perspective on the iconic love story, emphasizing the importance of empathy, mutual understanding, and selflessness in building a lasting relationship.

Ultimately, the lessons we learn from Romeo and Juliet’s story are just as relevant today as they were centuries ago, reminding us of the transformative power of love and the incredible heights that we can reach when we are willing to take a chance on it.

I am Featured in Vanity Fair and House and Garden

I am extremely happy to announce to be featured in these publications: Vanity Fair and House and Garden UK.

Let me tell you the story behind it.

It’s morning. I was going through my emails and I immediately saw an email that captured my attention right away.

It was signed by a company that I know very well: Condé Nast, a global mass media company ( Vogue, The New Yorker, GQ, Vanity Fair, Wired, Architectural Digest, and much more).

I recognized the signature immediately and that drove all my attention to it. The morning was just started, was sipping my morning coffee when I stumbled upon this email.

I scanned it and my enthusiasm increased

I quickly showed the email to Stacy, and we were immediately excited.

“How did they find me”, I thought immediately… “that is unexpected”. The email was asking for an online meeting to follow up and further the conversation.

They reviewed my website and they wanted to offer me the opportunity to showcase my artwork.

I remember it was a weekend but I answered immediately anyway.

The following Monday I received the answer to my previous email. The lady who wrote the email scheduled a phone call for the next day.

We talked about my career and what I was up to. She asked me to provide some pictures and some captions.

Today I am standing here with these magazines and my name on them. I think about how much work was done but also how nice is to overcome some obstacles once in a while.

My journey started 20 years ago, I was attending the Fine art academy. I wasn’t strong enough at that time to believe in myself and pursue my career so I quit.

A wandering lasted 20 years that finally brought me back home like Odysseus. After many traps and pitfalls, I am back to painting.

And I also published my first book!

A tribute to all veterans and the story of my grandfather form the second world war

As I pay tribute to all Veterans, my thoughts drift to the story of my grandfather, who served as the subject of one of my paintings. During the Second World War, he chose to defy the law and covertly evade military service.

This is the inspiring narrative behind my artwork, one that occurred during a unique time in history.

My grandfather, whom we affectionately called “Nonno Domenico,” was still living when I came into this world. Our bond was unique and meaningful, and he exuded a gentle and kind demeanor.

His wrinkled face framed his deep blue eyes, which I will never forget.

Unfortunately, when I was only five years old, he died in a senseless car accident that occurred right in front of his house.

He was walking on the side of the road and a car hit him. They never found the offender.

and old picture of my grandparents
An old picture of my grandparents

One day my parents told me his story.

During June, Hitler commanded the invasion of the Soviet Union, an operation known as “Barbarossa,” which was supported by the Italian army.

This region experienced some of the most significant battles and horrifying atrocities in history, all of which played a crucial role in shaping the course of World War II and the events that followed in the 20th century.

While serving in Russia alongside other Italian soldiers, my grandfather chose to desert the army covertly. At the time, he had a wife and a few children back home, with my mother yet to be born.

Deserting the army: the immense bravery and audacity of my grandfather

My grandfather’s main motivation for deserting was to avoid dying in battle and leaving behind his wife and children as orphans and a widow. His decision was an act of immense bravery and audacity, as he undertook the daunting task of walking back home, which took over 300 hours and spanned a distance of a thousand miles.

To avoid detection, he avoided main roads and traveled incognito.

Meanwhile, a covert resistance movement emerged among both the general population and the Italian army, ultimately leading to the downfall of Mussolini’s regime.

The toll of surviving an unimaginable ordeal

Upon returning from Russia, my grandfather had not only completed a journey equivalent to the distance from New Orleans to Washington or New York, but he also had to remain hidden underground for an entire year upon reaching home.

Just imagine having to spend every day hidden underground, isolated from the outside world, and only able to see your family at night.

My grandfather managed to survive this unimaginable ordeal, but the toll it took on him was severe. He was profoundly changed by the experience, becoming extremely withdrawn and reserved. He spoke very infrequently and suffered from intense nightmares.

When I first met my grandfather, I was too young to know about the hardships he had faced. Even if I had known, it’s hard to imagine fully comprehending the depth of his experiences as a child.

Now, 35 years later, I can only recall a handful of memories. I remember his eyes and his pipe, the smell of his cigarettes, his relaxed attire, and his sense of humor. I also remember how thin he was, with a belt that held up loose pants too big for his waist. He carried a knife he made himself.

Looking back now, I can’t help but think that if my grandfather had not been so courageous in defying the rules, I might not be here today to share his story.

While I believe it’s important to honor and remember the sacrifices of veterans and those who have given their lives to protect us, I also recognize that not every war is just or necessary.

Today, I am honoring my grandfather’s memory and celebrating the courageous decision he made to desert the war and save his own life, ultimately paving the way for mine.

Honoring my grandfather’s memory and celebrating his courageous decision

The original painting was sold in 2021 and is now owned by a private collector. It’s a watercolor on paper framed with a brown cigar leaf frame.

The emotional impact of sharing my grandfather’s story

One of my watercolor paintings, which included a portrait of my grandfather, was featured in my first gallery exhibition in America in 2021. The exhibition took place in St. Pete, Florida.

As I shared the story of my grandfather, I noticed a person next to me who was going through some strong emotions. He expressed how much he loved the painting and said, “We all have that man in our lives.”

I handed him the painting and told him that it was his. When I visited his home recently, his wife shared with me that they plan to keep it forever.

No war is just or necessary: the true costs of war and sacrifices made by individuals.

My grandfather was a man who made a courageous decision during a time of war. He went against the law and deserted the military service, walking over a thousand miles to return to his family.

I am grateful for his decision to desert the military, which ultimately saved his life and allowed me to exist.

Through my grandfather’s story, I have come to the realization that no war is just or necessary. While we should honor those who have served, we must also acknowledge the true costs of war and the sacrifices made by individuals and their families.

The bravery shown by my grandfather in deciding to desert the army rather than risk leaving his family without a husband and father is a testament to the human spirit and our innate desire to protect and care for our loved ones. His actions have had a profound impact on my life and I am grateful for the opportunity to share his story with others.

Palazzo Bembo is one of the late Gothic Venetian buildings built in the right middle of the famous Canal Grande, a few meters from the renowned Rialto Bridge. Its name comes from the humanist and literary cardinal Pietro Bembo, known for the so-called “linguistic question” during the Italian XV century.

The facade of the building is as fascinating as the interior, divided into three floors and characterized by large salons. The seventeenth-century staircase overlooks the internal courtyard that leads to the noble floor, where decorations date back to the same century, in Baroque style.

Announcement: My book is ready

I just want to share with the world my joy and excitement. I am very happy to announce that I published my first book.

After these two years of work, I went through different stages and this is my attempt to document my work.

Each collection is a unique theme and tackles different topics. For example, in the Romeo and Juliet collection (2021) each painting is a stage of the story.

I wanted to create this book because I feel is important to document the work done. When I do an exhibition I usually explain in person some of the details about the artwork, and this is a great opportunity to have everything explained in a single document.

Caravaggio madonna dei palafrenieri

I want to introduce a new series of posts. I want to discover again old paintings and make them accessible to all.

Caravaggio's "Madonna dei Palafrenieri" is a beautiful and thought-provoking painting that showcases the artist's innovative style and deep understanding of human emotions. Created around 1606, this oil on canvas painting is housed in the Vatican Pinacoteca in Rome, Italy, and continues to captivate art lovers and historians alike with its powerful symbolism and dramatic lighting effects.

Caravaggio Madonna dei Palafrenieri was commissioned by the confraternity of the Palafrenieri, who wanted to place it on an altar in St. Peter's Basilica in 1606.
Caravaggio was offered only 70 scudi for this work, but despite the low price he accepted, being in a period of hardship, even those few scudi were needed.

The painting depicts the Madonna and Child, a popular subject in art during the Renaissance. However, Caravaggio's interpretation of this traditional theme is unique and groundbreaking. Unlike many other depictions of the Madonna and Child, the figures in "Madonna dei Palafrenieri" are not idealized or glamorized, but instead are depicted as real, flesh-and-blood people. The Madonna is not a serene and remote goddess, but rather a young woman who looks down at her child with a tender expression of love and concern. Her features are not perfect, but are instead carefully observed and depicted with a remarkable sense of realism. This shift from the idealized to the real is a hallmark of Caravaggio's style and was highly influential for future artists.

Despite the very low cost of the painting, the work was immediately rejected by the clients for several reasons: the baby Jesus was too big to appear naked, moreover, the Virgin showed a too wide neckline, and then they absolutely did not accept that it was Lena, a prostitute who represented Maria.

Later he was also criticized by Catholics: the attitude of Jesus in stepping on the snake, according to them, seemed almost as if he enjoyed killing the snake.
All these criticisms labeled Caravaggio's painting as a heretical painting.

Later the painting was sold to the Borghese family for 100 scudi.

Check this painting in ultra-high resolution

In addition to its innovative depiction of the Madonna and Child, "Madonna dei Palafrenieri" is also notable for its dramatic lighting effects. Caravaggio was a master of the art of chiaroscuro, using contrasts of light and dark to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. In this painting, he employs this technique to great effect, casting a bright light on the Madonna and Child and leaving the background in shadow. This creates a sense of intimacy and focus on the central figures, as well as a heightened sense of drama. The stark contrast of light and dark also serves to emphasize the powerful emotions of the Madonna and Child, drawing the viewer's attention to their expressions and gestures.

Another aspect of "Madonna dei Palafrenieri" that sets it apart from other paintings of the time is its symbolism. The painting's title, "Madonna dei Palafrenieri," refers to the palafrenieri, or horsemen, who served in the papal court. This title has led some to interpret the painting as a symbol of the church's protection of the faithful, with the Madonna and Child representing the church and the palafrenieri serving as its guardians. Additionally, the light in the painting has been seen as a symbol of divine grace, with the Madonna and Child symbolizing the source of that grace.

In conclusion, Caravaggio's "Madonna dei Palafrenieri" is a masterful work of art that showcases the artist's innovative style and deep understanding of human emotions. Its unique depiction of the Madonna and Child, dramatic lighting effects, and powerful symbolism continue to captivate audiences and inspire artists to this day. This painting is a testament to Caravaggio's skill as a painter and his ability to create powerful, thought-provoking works of art that continue to inspire and engage viewers centuries after their creation.

Who is Caravaggio

Caravaggio was an Italian baroque artist known for his dramatic use of light and dark, known as chiaroscuro, in his paintings. Born in Milan in 1571, he spent much of his career working in Rome, where he became known for his realistic and often controversial depictions of religious and classical themes. Caravaggio's innovative approach to painting, which emphasized the use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth and atmosphere, had a profound impact on the development of baroque art and continues to influence artists to this day.

Despite his success, Caravaggio lived a tumultuous life, plagued by legal troubles and violent behavior, and died at the young age of 38. Nevertheless, his artistic legacy endures, and his works are considered some of the most important and innovative of the baroque period.
