Why I've Abandoned Abstract Art: A Personal Perspective

The purpose of this post is to provide my perspective on the value of figurative art in storytelling. It is important to note that the opinions expressed are solely my own and may not necessarily reflect those of others.

The Power of Figurative Art in Storytelling

Art has been an integral part of human civilization for centuries. It is a medium through which people can express themselves, their ideas, and their emotions. Painters, in particular, have a unique ability to create visually stunning works of art that convey complex messages and ideas.

As a painter, I firmly believe that figurative art is the best medium to tell stories and convey messages.

Decoding the Art World: Navigating the Debate Between Figurative and Abstract Art

The debate over the value of abstract art versus figurative art has been ongoing for decades. Many argue that abstract art is the natural evolution of figurative art, building on the principles of form, color, and composition established by earlier artists. The work of Vasily Kandinsky, in particular, is often cited as an example of how abstract art can be used to translate music into a visual vocabulary, creating interesting and thought-provoking concepts.

While it is true that Kandinsky’s work paved the way for new possibilities in the art world, it can be argued that the subsequent shift towards abstract art has taken modern art down a strange and confusing path. The abandonment of recognizable imagery and form has left many modern artworks without any clear guidelines or rules, leaving the burden of interpretation solely on the spectator. As a result, many viewers are left feeling alienated and confused by these works, struggling to decipher their meaning or significance.

Despite this, it is important to recognize that the value of abstract art is not simply a matter of personal taste or preference. When used effectively, abstract art can be a powerful tool for conveying emotions, ideas, and concepts that cannot be expressed through traditional figurative art. The challenge for contemporary artists is to find a balance between the freedom and innovation that abstract art affords, and the communicative power of figurative art that connects with the viewer on a deeper level.

In my own work as an artist, I have found that figurative art provides a more relatable and accessible means of storytelling. Through the use of recognizable imagery, symbolism, and metaphor, I am able to convey messages and ideas in a way that engages and resonates with viewers. However, I also recognize the value of abstract art in exploring new possibilities and pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms.

Ultimately, the choice between abstract and figurative art comes down to personal preference and artistic vision.

Both approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, and each artist must decide which style best suits their individual goals and message.

The Dark Side of Abstract Art: How Weekend Painters Are Ruining the Art World

Furthermore, in the present day art world, there is an abundance of individuals who pursue art as a casual hobby without investing in the study of color, composition, anatomy, or storytelling.

These amateur artists simply apply paint to canvases in the hopes of generating some additional income without truly understanding the principles and techniques that underpin the creation of compelling works of art.

These amateur artists who dabble in art as a casual hobby and without pursuing enough competence have often turned to abstract art as their weapon of choice. One of the main reasons for this is that abstract art is relatively simple to afford, both in terms of time and resources.

The lack of foundational knowledge of color, composition, and anatomy can lead to works that lack coherence and impact. The absence of a clear message or narrative can also leave viewers feeling disconnected or unengaged with the artwork.

My personal choice

To clarify, I have never been drawn entirely to abstract art.

While I can appreciate its beauty and aesthetic value, it simply does not speak to me in the way that figurative art does.

I believe that figurative art, which is grounded in realism and representation, is the most effective way to communicate a message to an audience.

This is why all my work pivots around storytelling.

Storytelling has always been an essential part of human communication. Through stories, we can learn, connect with others, and explore the complexities of the world around us.

As a painter, my goal is to tell stories that inspire, educate, and provoke thought. I use figurative art to create narratives that are both visually stunning and intellectually stimulating.

Two of my stories as an example

Romeo and Juliet

Read the story

As an artist, I have had the privilege of using figurative art to tell a variety of stories. Two cases that particularly stand out to me are the story of my grandfather Domenico and the Romeo and Juliet collection.

For the portrait of my grandfather, I wanted to capture his strength, dignity, and wisdom. I carefully selected the colors and composition to convey his personality and the challenges he had faced in his life. The result was a powerful portrait that communicated his life story and the lessons he had learned. This painting not only honored my grandfather’s memory but also served as an inspiration to others who saw it.

In the Romeo and Juliet collection, each painting served as a chapter of the story. I used figurative art to capture the emotion, drama, and tragedy of the famous Shakespearean play.

By using recognizable imagery and symbolism, I was able to convey the complex themes of the play and immerse viewers in the story. The collection became a powerful and emotional journey that resonated with viewers on a deep level.

These two cases demonstrate the power and versatility of figurative art. Whether it is a portrait of a loved one or a series of paintings that tell a story, figurative art can be used to create a connection with viewers and communicate a message that transcends language and culture.

Beyond the Canvas: Creating a Connection with Viewers

Figurative art allows me to create characters, settings, and scenarios that are relatable to viewers. By using recognizable imagery, I can engage viewers on a more personal level and draw them into the story. Whether it is a portrait of a person or a landscape painting, figurative art can convey a sense of familiarity that makes the message more accessible and relatable.

Furthermore, figurative art offers a wealth of symbolism and metaphor that can be used to enhance the message. By carefully selecting the objects, colors, and textures in a painting, I can create layers of meaning that enrich the story and provoke deeper thought.

The symbolism in a painting can be used to explore complex themes such as identity, mortality, and social issues.

Ultimately, my goal as a painter is to create art that resonates with people on a deep level.

Figurative art allows me to do this by using storytelling as a means of communication. By telling stories through painting, I can create a connection with viewers that goes beyond the mere visual experience of the art.

This connection can inspire, educate, and provoke thought, and it is the reason why I choose to work exclusively in figurative art.

why art education is important

Fostering Tolerance and Understanding

Art is a universal language that transcends borders, language, and cultural barriers. It has the power to connect people from different backgrounds and experiences, fostering tolerance and understanding. By seeing life through the point of view of others, we can create empathy, compassion, and brotherhood, essential qualities for a peaceful and inclusive society.

In a world where cancel culture and polarization are becoming more prevalent, experiencing art can be a way to promote tolerance, diversity, and acceptance. By seeing the world from different perspectives and engaging with different ideas, we can develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, essential tools for navigating a complex and ever-changing world.

The Transformative Power of Art: Why Experiencing Art First-Hand is Essential for Everyone

Experiencing art first-hand can be a transformative experience, one that allows us to connect with the world and people in a deeper and more meaningful way. By visiting museums, galleries, or even attending art events in our community, we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a world of colors, shapes, and textures, and to learn about the history, culture, and ideas that inspired them.

"Art education is like a gym for the mind, training and strengthening mental muscles that enable us to think more creatively and critically."

Alex Righetto

“Strength takes many forms, and the most obvious forms are not always the most significant.

The men who create power make an indispensable contribution to the Nation’s greatness, but the men who question power make a contribution just as indispensable, especially when that questioning is disinterested, for they determine whether we use power or power uses us.

When power leads men towards arrogance, Art reminds him of his limitations.

When power narrows the areas of man’s concern, Art reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, Art cleanses.

For Art establishes the basic human truth which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment.“

My personal experience

In 2022, I had the privilege of taking my family on a tour of some of the world’s most renowned art museums. From the Biennale in Venice to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Cathedral, from the National Gallery in London to the MoMA in New York City, we were able to experience art in all its glorious forms. This journey was truly one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

The Importance of Experiencing Art First-Hand

Experiencing art first-hand is a truly enriching experience, one that allows us to connect with the art and artists in a deep and meaningful way. By visiting museums, we are able to see art in its original form, taking in the colors, textures, and details that make each piece truly unique.

In addition, visiting museums provides us with the opportunity to see a wide range of art, from ancient masterpieces to contemporary works. This exposure to a diverse array of art helps us to understand the different styles and movements that have shaped the art world over time.

The Impact of Direct Experience on a Young Mind

My daughter Anastacia, who was 11 at the time, was particularly inspired by our visits to museums. During our tour, she fell in love with the art of the ancient Egyptians and was captivated by the intricate sculptures and beautiful paintings we encountered. Her direct experience with art was transformative and has left a lasting impression on her.

In fact, Anastacia now has more hands-on experience with art than many art teachers in America. The passion and curiosity she developed during our museum visits have inspired her to take up painting and pursue a career as an artist. This just goes to show the powerful impact that direct exposure to art can have on a young mind.

It is our responsibility to educate ourselves, and the next generation, about the importance of art and its role in shaping our world. We must advocate for policies and institutions that support artists and their work, and we must strive to create a more inclusive and diverse art world.

Through art, we can learn about ourselves, others, and the world we inhabit. We can see life through the eyes of others, and in doing so, develop empathy and understanding. We can challenge our assumptions, broaden our perspectives, and see the world in new and exciting ways.

Therefore, let us continue to support and promote art education, and the vital role that art plays in our society. By doing so, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of art, and use it as a tool for personal and societal growth.

The Characteristics of Alex Righetto’s Watercolor Style

At the heart of Alex Righetto’s watercolor paintings is his role as a storyteller. With each brush stroke, Alex creates a narrative that captures the essence of the subject and the story it represents. One of the best examples of this is the portrait of his grandfather Domenico, which not only captures his likeness, but also his spirit and the memories he holds dear. Another example is the Romeo and Juliet collection, which explores the timeless tale of two star-crossed lovers through the medium of watercolor. And finally, the Radiant collection showcases Alex’s ability to bring life and energy to his paintings through the use of color and light.

It takes courage to bring watercolors into a world that is shining with neon lights, but Alex uses the medium in a very clever way. His technical ability, combined with his emotional connection to the subjects he paints, makes for watercolor paintings that are not only beautiful but also thought-provoking and impactful. Alex’s watercolor paintings are a testament to the power of art as a means of storytelling and emotional expression.

How Alex Righetto’s Study in Italy Influences His Watercolor Paintings

Alex Righetto’s dedication to his craft can be seen in the attention to detail and technical mastery present in his watercolor paintings. As a young artist, Alex studied nude models since the age of 16, honing his skills in anatomy and the human form. This early education has served him well, as the human body is often a central subject in his paintings, depicted with grace, precision, and a deep understanding of anatomy.

The study of the human form is just one aspect of Alex’s education that was shaped by the Italian culture. In Italy, beauty is a concept that is deeply intertwined with the society, reflected in the phrase “Bello” or “Bellissimo,” which means “beautiful.” This cultural appreciation for beauty is evident in Alex’s watercolor paintings, where he brings to life a world of grace, elegance, and timeless beauty. Whether capturing the form of the human body or the serenity of a landscape, Alex’s paintings are a celebration of the beauty that surrounds us.

The Radiance: A Stunning Portrait by Alex Righetto

Alex Righetto’s connection to the Italian Renaissance concept of beauty is an integral part of his artistic heritage and influences his watercolor paintings in profound ways. The Italian Renaissance was a time of great artistic and cultural achievement, characterized by a revival of classical learning and a focus on the beauty of the natural world. This cultural legacy is evident in Alex’s watercolor paintings, which are steeped in the traditions of Renaissance art and the beauty that it represents.

However, this connection to the Renaissance is not without its challenges. As an Italian artist, Alex carries the weight of a rich cultural heritage and the expectations that come with it. He must balance the influence of the Renaissance with his own unique vision and style, creating paintings that are both timeless and contemporary. This is a weight that is not always easy to carry, but it is one that Alex embraces with pride and a commitment to honoring the traditions of his heritage. Through his watercolor paintings, Alex continues the legacy of the Italian Renaissance, infusing it with his own modern touch and creating works of art that are both beautiful and thought-provoking.

The Emotion and Intensity in Alex Righetto’s Watercolor Art

At the core of Alex Righetto’s watercolor paintings is an emotional connection that sets his work apart from the rest. For Alex, every painting must have a story to tell, a message to convey, and an inspiration to offer. This policy has earned him a reputation as an artist who creates paintings that not only captivate the eye, but also touch the heart.

Alex’s paintings are not just a display of technical skill, but also a testament to his ability to connect with his subjects on an emotional level. Whether it’s the serene beauty of a landscape or the intensity of a portrait, each of Alex’s paintings holds within it a unique story and a message of hope, inspiration, and beauty. For Alex, art is not just a means of expression, but a way of connecting with others and sharing his love for the world. Through his watercolor paintings, Alex invites us to see the beauty in the world around us and to experience the same emotional connection that he feels.

Quick facts

Schedule: The fair will be held from November 30 to December 4, 2022

Location: Mana Wynwood 2217 NW 5th Avenue, NW 22nd St, Miami, FL 33127

Tickets for the exhibitions span between $35 to $100 on the event website. But because I am exhibiting I can offer you complimentary tickets. More on that later.

Last Year

Last year I exhibited my artwork at Spectrum and that was my first time attending such a big event. I had my own booth and I introduced my Romeo and Juliet collection.

The participation, travel, hotel expenses, the rent of the space, marketing, and the creation of the artwork cost me probably more than $20k. That’s how much I had to pay to make sure people would see my art. It was a few days of extreme work, exhausting but at the end very rewarding.

I gave away lots of complimentary tickets last year, and lots of people came to say hi to me at my booth. This year I am asking to make a small donation to my non-profit organization in order to get the tickets.

During covid Stacy, my partner, and I  fundraiser 150,000 meals for people in need.

As I said, tickets for the exhibitions span between $35 to $100 on the event website. But because I am exhibiting I can offer you complimentary tickets. I am only asking for a donation of $10 to the non-profit organization (instead of paying $100). Its a win for everyone. You get to see great art and I get to keep helping lots of people in need.

Palazzo Bembo is one of the late Gothic Venetian buildings built in the right middle of the famous Canal Grande, a few meters from the renowned Rialto Bridge. Its name comes from the humanist and literary cardinal Pietro Bembo, known for the so-called “linguistic question” during the Italian XV century.

The facade of the building is as fascinating as the interior, divided into three floors and characterized by large salons. The seventeenth-century staircase overlooks the internal courtyard that leads to the noble floor, where decorations date back to the same century, in Baroque style.
